  Located at 57th street and Wynnefield Ave., Gompers School is led by principal Mr. Phillip Delucca. The Pennsylvania College of Optometry is conducting an eye screening research program, under the direction of Dr. Michael Galloway, available to all Gompers students. The study includes general visual screening, a Visual Efficiency Rating, and visual training.
 
The Chiandeh Afrocentric Curriculum and Textbook Experience is an Afrocentric curriculum developed by African Theatre Actor/Director Joseph Tomoonb-Garlodeyh, Gbaba, Sr. The program provides the opportunities for children in reading, writing, speaking, listening, acting and peace education and conflict resolution techniques through African plays, fireside stories, narratives, and poetry.
  The Study Island Web Based Program is a training program for students and parents as well to electronically monitor homework assignments.
 
The Home and School association is quite active and led by its president Ms. Carmen Harris
Programs it sponsors include:
 
  • Canned foods drive benefiting shelters.
  • Spring Bunny Hop to benefit Muscular Dystrophy programs.
  • Dress down day with proceeds to local nursing homes.
  • St. Joseph’s students after school homework help program.

    BOOK DISCUSSIONS AT THE WYNNEFIELD LIBRARY
    What is the What by Dave Eggers is the “One City, One Book” selection for this year. Bill Wattson, the adult librarian at the Wynnefield Branch Free Library urges members of the community to check out a copy, read it and come to a thscussion about it on January 30th at 6 p.m. There is also a resource guide available which provides interesting information about the Lost Boys of Sudan.
     
    On January 28th at 6:30 p.m. Carla Wiley, a member of
      the Black Storytellers will be at the Library to tell stories about the Lost Boys of Sudan.
     
    The Friends of the Library group at the Wynnefield Branch have, again, received a grant from the Pennsylvarna Humanities Council as part of their “Read About It” series. Choices will be from the American Life Stories category. Four books will be read, one a month,, and respective discussions will be held on the fourth Wednesday of February (27th),
      March (26th), April (23rd), and May (28th). We will begin on February 1st (You can even register late.) Books will be provided by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Registration forms will be available at the branch.
     
    Come and join us. We had a fantastic time last year!!

    The Wynnefield Focus is published by the Wynnefield Residents Association Publicity Committee
    The objective of the WRA Publicity Committtee is to publish articles aimed at keeping the residents of Wynnefield informed about events, activities and issues affecting the Wynnnfield community directly or indirectly, or with the potential to affect the community. We will attempt to publish information in an accurate, timely and comprehensive manner.
     
    While all editions of the Focus will be on the WRA Website, WRA will continue to make hardcopy versions available at the Anderson Center and through member mailings.
